Indifference

I know, or I thought I knew
That I would be perfect for you
But I know, with all my faults,
I think too many things at once
And I’m told, that you don’t want me
But sometimes it seems you’re still wanting me
And I’m sure, or at least I see now
That I don’t know all that much about you

I know, when the phone rings
That you’re going to run for the call
I’m sure this one’s for you
Who else would this one be for?
And I’m told that you don’t want me
But what the hell do you want from me
And I know, but I can’t be sure
That I don’t know all that much about you

If you’re going to send me on my way
Send me on my way
If you’d rather walk away
Walk away
But please don’t make me wait
Because like a fool
I’ll be waiting here for you

I suppose that it’s for the best
There’s just too many things at stake
And I know your indifference
Makes it hard for you to give and take
And I’m told that you don’t want me
But I don’t think you really know [what you want]
If you’d take some time you’d see
You don’t know all that much about me

If you’re going to send me on my way
Send me on my way
If you’d rather walk away
Walk away
But please don’t make me wait
Because like a fool
I’ll be waiting here for you

Sunburn

I know you’ve set off down that road
But you know you can’t win
You can’t win when you’re in the shape your in now, man

And when you’re only going in circles
You only can go
Round and round and around and back again

And when you’re all messed up inside
You need to hide and I know where
There’s some caves at the coast we can go there just say when

And we’ll ride off into the sun
And though we both might get
A little sunburn we’re going to be the better for it

We’re going to be the best of friends
We’re going to be the best of friends
You know that life’s got a lot to give
We’ve got a lot to get
And we should be ready for it
we should be ready for it

And though it’s easy to forget
That we are in the thick of it
Everyone’s watching no one is confident

But I will stand right by your side
Until it seems to you I’ve always been
The one to confide in the one soul you understand

We’re going to be the best of friends
We’re going to be the best of friends
You know that life’s got a lot to give
We’ve got a lot to get
And we should be ready for it
we should be ready for it

And not try to understand
And not try to make to much sense of it

Though I try not to complicate things
I think it’s the safe to bet
That if it’s going with the flow then I’m going to go with it

We’re going to be the best of friends
We’re going to be the best of friends
You know that life’s got a lot to give
We’ve got a lot to get
And we should be ready for it
we should be ready for it

Blue Mountain

For two days now
There’s been no one on the train
(No one on the train) heading west

Talk is cheap
And it’s quick to place the blame
And pass along misfortunes of men

He should be leaving there now and
Heading back this way but
(His) motives now are anybody’s guess
(His) motives now are anybody’s guess
(His) motives now are anybody’s guess

No, he won’t back down
He won’t back down just yet
No, he’ll stand his ground
And bury his guilt again

The sun is counting down
The minutes in the day
And setting on the memories of men

There’s only one left standing
And we’ll never know his name
(Never know his name) from the rest

It would be altogether different
If there was another way but
It’s not the time and place for regret
It’s not the time and place for regret
It’s not the time and place for regret

No, he won’t back down
He won’t back down just yet
No, he will stand his ground
And bury his guilt again

Motives now are anybody’s guess
Motives now are anybody’s guess

No, he won’t back down
He won’t back down just yet
No, he will stand his ground
And bury his guilt again
Let all the rain fall down
Let it clear his head
No it’s too late now
To save a guilty man
To save a guilty man

Spy on the Wing

It’s called the butterfly effect
They say that everything we see will make its way
Further down the line, but I didn’t believe
Amplified in time and intensity

I was having nightmares thinking of
The tribes in the Amazon
Running from the black sky moth machine
Running from the very thing I had seen

Twenty years ago
On a scale that’s nowhere near
What it is now
You’ve got to wonder what they’re thinking
With their bows and arrows
Trying to shoot it down
Trying to kill the black sky moth machine
Trying to be free

What started as a curiosity
A photo however discrete
Turned into an eye in the sky
Turned into a spy on the wing

And I never even wanted to know
I never even wanted to see
The image they were trying to sell
An image I had already seen

Twenty years ago
On a scale that’s nowhere near
What it is now
You’ve got to wonder what they’re thinking
With their bows and arrows
Trying to shoot it down
Trying to kill the black sky moth machine
Trying to be free

A Few Degrees

Come on keep the record playing
He could go on all day like this
It’s raining, he can see it pouring
He could go on all day like this
He stands to get a cigarette
He puts a drink up to his lips
He knows the window is waiting
The window waits for him
But there’s no one looking in
But there’s no one looking in

You can watch him walk around the room in the dark
See him breathing in a shadowbox
Waiting by the window, staring at his stars
Moving a few degrees too far

He can see the winter coming
The winter is slowly coming in
He watches the leaves falling
The leaves are falling in the wind
He takes a drag from his cigarette
He takes a sip of gin in
He knows the window is waiting
The window waits for him
But there’s no one looking in
But there’s no one looking in

You can watch him walk around the room in the dark
See him breathing in a shadowbox
Waiting by the window, staring at his stars
Moving a few degrees too far

You can watch him walk around the room in the dark
See him breathing in a shadowbox
Waiting by the window, staring at his stars
Moving a few degrees too far

The Tide

When the clouds look that way I know
Rain the rest of the day I know
That I can go back outside again
I can go outside again
Today or tomorrow

When the full moon fades I know
New moon for days I know
That it will come back around again
Waxing back around full again
Today or tomorrow

But why would I have ever said
I didn’t need you
When indeed I need you
Why with all the miles ahead
I didn’t need you
When indeed I need you

The tides will turn again I know
They’ll rise and fall again I know
It always seems steady and repetitive
While the choice I made seems so permanent
Today and tomorrow

But why would I have ever said
I didn’t need you
When indeed I need you
Why with all the miles ahead
I didn’t need you
When indeed I need you
Why given all the love you had
I didn’t need you
When indeed I need you

Brother

Brother you’ve got to be
Ready and anticipating
Soon enough you will see
Tomorrow is always waiting
And patience is a virtue to seek
Not one worth your debating
So when your day comes, brother, please
Live it like it’s already fading

Brother, take it from me
We all will fail, we all will falter
Soon enough you will see
That can only make us stronger
And patience is a virtue to seek
Not one that you should try to alter
So when your day comes, brother, please
Live it like it won’t get any longer

Love isn’t always clear
Love isn’t always such a steady hold
Some will come, when you don’t want them here
And some will run, when they should never go
But if in truth you hide
What should be your feelings known
You’re pushing
And you’re shoving love aside
You’re pushing
And you’ll never know

End of Days

Would you save my soul, save my soul
Should I need
Someone to save it for me

Would you be my crutch, be my crutch
should I need
You to be there for me

And if I try too hard, try too hard
Would you please
Do your best to reconcile me

I know I shouldn’t depend on one, depend on one and only you
That’s not a logical thing to do
I have a feeling you’ll leave me, leave me high and dry too
That’s just the sense I am getting from you

Would you walk away, walk away
or stay and insist
That I’m asking for more than you can give

At the end of days, the end of days like this
I’ve had all I can take of it

I know I shouldn’t depend on one, depend on one and only you
That’s not a logical thing to do
I have a feeling you’ll leave me, leave me high and dry too
That’s just the sense I am getting from you

I’ve got to let it go (let it go, let it go), I’ve to let it go before you take it all
Because you take from me (you take and you take from me)
You take from me and it’s almost gone
I’ve got to give this up, I’ve got to give it up. I’ve to give this all up right now
But you take from me (you take and you take from me)
You take from me and I’m all worn out

I know I shouldn’t depend on one, depend on one and only you
That’s not a logical thing to do
I have a feeling you’ll leave me, leave me high and dry too
That’s just the sense I am getting from you

Easy

You should be remembering
Walking around with me in the apple seed
Trees and we were determining
Who we ought to be and we made it seem
Easy as if our destiny
Were on the forest floor, at our feet

It's easy to see
The stars when the sky is clear
Easy to read
Your mind when its all I hear
Easy to stay on track
When the path is marked
But the path is dark and I’m losing time here

I don’t know
When it occurred to me
That it can’t be clear
Like we made it seem
I’m always making waves
Ahead of me
I’m wasting all my days
Consistently

It's easy to see
The stars when the sky is clear
Easy to read
Your mind when its all I hear
Easy to stay on track
When the path is marked
But the path is dark and I’m losing time here

We both went our own way
Same lines same rules to face
We found a place we could move around
Same lines at the edge of town
I heard your words but I disagree
The same lines on you are on me

It's easy to see
The stars when the sky is clear
Easy to read
Your mind when its all I hear
Easy to stay on track
When the path is marked
But the path is dark and I’m losing time here

Red Sky Morning

I’ve got some bad news
It’s red sky morning
It’s everyone in the same spot
With eyes to the sky
The sky is falling and
No one wants that on their watch

I can’t handle this
Lack of warning
This guilt and mourning
This cheap shot
If you never see me again,
Forget me not

We got all of these
Fools around us
Some to draw out our fearful thoughts
And some who think they know
How to guide us
But most are here
To take all we’ve got

I can’t handle this
Blind disorder
This truth you launder
Is a long shot
If you never see me again,
Forget me not

Try to convince me
Try to make sense of it
I’m listening but I’m not hearing much
Wait for the red sky morning or the
Armageddon you say will come

I can’t handle these
Aspirations
These superstitions
This big shot
If you never see me again,
Forget me not

Going Going Gone, Part I

You say you’re going away
Can’t take another day
You’re going, going, gone

You think another place
Can top this place
And I can’t tell you that you’re wrong
I can’t tell that it won’t

But if you think I’ve got no
Questions you are wrong
I’ve got a list a mile long

And soon my day will come
I’m going to sit you down
And make you answer some
I’m going to make you answer some

You’re going to leave us all
You’re going, going, gone

Going Going Gone, Part II

So you’re not feeling yourself today
Take a day then a wake up
Take a step toward a better way
Make your move, take a step up

I’ve got a new way
I’ve found some tough love
I’ve got a new way
I want to see you,
I want to make you move

You talk of change
But focus to do so you don’t have enough of
Money and status can wait
But your time you need to make the most of

I’ve got a new way
I’ve found some tough love
I’ve got a new way
I want to see you,
I want to make you move

If you want to change, you’ve got to move

Prairie Song (Instrumental)

Hurricanes

In the open sea, with no shoreline near
The waves roll free and the water’s clear
You’re holding out but it’s her intent
At any cost to make things right again
But when the waves slow down, they start crashing and
Breaking up, How long has she been
Betting on your slowing speed?
Watching the horizon she’s
Looking forward to any change
But praying for hurricanes
To bring you in where you can love her more
To bring the waves crashing to the shore

And in a raging storm the weather change
Brings howling winds and pouring rains
You’re going to wait it out, tell her you love her still
And though you question that, you add “I always will”
But when the current’s strong you get carried away
You can fight awhile but how long can you stay?
Regretting your own slowing speed
Watching the horizon creep
Further and further still
Praying the current will
Take you back from where you came
Can it take you to the sea again?

Oh and nothing ever changes anyway
You fight it some, I fight it some and still
We drift further and further away
We let the sea take us where it will
